WHICH PLANET DOES SHE LIVE ON?

It is true – the figures prove it! A random survey of 2000 people over 16 conducted by the Office for National Statistics has proved that the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act has improved the daily lives of all disabled people. For example, less than one percent had been refused the sale or rental of a property because they were disabled. Well, were these properties accessible to disabled people in the first place? Did they ask what percentage of their family and friends' houses were accessible to them?

Predictably Anne McGuire, Minister for the Disabled, was delighted with these ‘findings' and concluded that the Act was “making a real difference to the everyday lives of disabled people”.

The following letter has been sent to the Minister from one of our Brecon members, Anne Summers –

Dear Ms McGuire

I am responding to your ridiculous statement that Disabled People reap the rewards of the Disability Discrimination Act. How I would love to live in the areas where these great improvements have taken place.

I live in Brecon, Powys. A new bus terminus has recently been completed including raised areas for wheelchair users to access buses. Some buses are now equipped to allow wheelchair users to use them, unfortunately if they actually access a bus at this terminus, they will have to purchase a “round” ticket as there are no raised bus stops in Powys for them to dismount! Thus, they either return to the terminus or travel to Cardiff or Swansea . How is that for Disability Equality?
