BRECON WALKABOUT

On Friday 25 th July 2008 , PCC Chief Executive, Mark Kerr, and Roger Williams MP very kindly joined four members of Brecknock Access Group to experience some of the problems which both disabled and many able bodied people have to endure, not only in Brecon, but throughout Powys.

We met at the Tourist Information Centre in pouring rain where Mr Kerr and Mr Williams agreed to try to get around Brecon in a wheelchair and then wearing glasses which made them visually impaired.

Mr Kerr used the wheelchair first, ably assisted by the Vice Chairman of Brecknock access Group, Mr David Summers. They made their way from the car park and into Lion Street . All too soon Mr Kerr was forced to stop because of displays and rubbish blocking the pavement. At this point, David had to assist Mr Kerr onto the road into the path of oncoming traffic and over the speed humps in this narrow road. He was unable to re-gain access to the pavement until hereached “the Lounge”. Here, he got a wheel stuck in a drain and had to use so much force to get out of it, he went straight into a bollard.
