SCOOTER REGISTRATION

The requirement to register mobility scooters has always existed but has never been enforced by the DVLA and it only applies to Class 3 vehicles, those deemed to be suitable for road use, with a top speed of more than 4 mph but not exceeding 8 mph, the legal maximum in the UK . All such scooters and powerchairs will now need to be registered with the DVLA using the form V55/4 for new vehicles and V55/5 for used vehicles. These forms are normally obtained from the local DVLA office with the no-charge registration disc being sent from Head Office.

This information was provided by TPG Disable Aids who also offer assistance with the forms to existing and prospective users (Tel. 01432 351 666, email enquiries@tps-disableaids.co.uk .)

LIGHT SENSITIVITY

People with light sensitivity disorders, such as lupus face problems with the phasing out of incandescent light bulbs at the end of 2011. Low energy bulbs emit UV light that can aggravate these skin conditions. Some types of fluorescent strips in use in shops, hospitals, libraries and other public buildings also cause problems. The Lupus Society is working with an all-party group of MPs to identify solutions before incandescent lights are banned. One alternative that has been discussed is for sufferers to be allowed to import old-style light bulbs for their personal use. Let's hope it does not come to that!
