The market town of Brecon (Aberhonddu) lies in the heart of the beautiful Brecon Beacons. It is an historic town with remains of Iron Age Forts and a Roman Fort dating back to about 80A.D. The castle was built in about 1093 but now only the remains are left standing. The Guildhall in Brecon has stood on the same site for some 700 years and is still used by the local Town Council for their regular meetings. Parts of the present building of the beautiful Cathedral of St, John The Evangelist date back to 1093 but it is thought that the Cathedral may have been built on the site of a much earlier Celtic Church . Parking & Toilet Facilities THESE TOILETS ARE UNDERGOING RENOVATION AT PRESENT. ALTHOUGH A SIGN SUGGESTS THAT DISABLED TOILETS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE WELLINGTON AND WILLIAM HILL BOOKMAKERS ONLY THE SECOND OF THESE IS TRULY ACCESSIBLE. OTHERWISE THE ONLY PUBLIC TOILETS ARE IN THE MARKET HALL WHICH IS ONLY OPEN DURING BUSINESS HOURS. A DREADFUL SITUATION FOR A TOURIST DESTINATION! The town centre consists of narrow streets and historic buildings but some retailers have made disabled access possible. There are currently 6 disabled parking bays in the town and these are situated behind St. Mary's Church and along side the HSBC bank. Wheelchair access is pleasantly easy along the route from the Usk Bridge to the Promenade where again a Radar Key is needed to access the toilet. Transport |
