Brecon High Street

The market town of Brecon (Aberhonddu) lies in the heart of the beautiful Brecon Beacons. It is an historic town with remains of Iron Age Forts and a Roman Fort dating back to about 80A.D. The castle was built in about 1093 but now only the remains are left standing. The Guildhall in Brecon has stood on the same site for some 700 years and is still used by the local Town Council for their regular meetings. Parts of the present building of the beautiful Cathedral of St, John The Evangelist date back to 1093 but it is thought that the Cathedral may have been built on the site of a much earlier Celtic Church .

Parking & Toilet Facilities
The centre of the town comprises mainly Georgian houses where the main shopping area lies. A new fully accessible shopping centre at Bethel Square is easily reached from the Old Market Car Park where 18 Blue Badge parking bays are available. The Tourist Information Centre is housed in this car park and is accessible. Public Conveniences are situated on the junction of the car park and Lion Yard and a toilet for disabled people is available with the use of a Radar Key. The town centre consists of narrow streets and historic buildings but some retailers have made disabled access possible. There are currently 6 disabled parking bays in the town and these are situated behind St. Mary's Church and along side the HSBC bank. Wheelchair access is pleasantly easy along the route from the Usk Bridge to the Promenade where again a Radar Key is needed to access the toilet.
