Hay on Wye

Hay-on-Wye is an ancient border town on the river Wye, nowadays noted for some 40 second-hand (and 1 new) bookshops and an internationally recognised Festival of Literature and the Arts.

Many of the streets are steep, with mostly narrow pavements, making it difficult for wheelchair users. The Buttermarket (local market every Thursday) is often used for exhibitions and special markets and was accessible until 2004 when wheelchair access was removed. The Riverside Walk is level, except by Hay bridge where assistance is necessary to negotiate the steep slope.

Parking and Toilet Facilities

At the main point of arrival – the central car park – there are five spaces (on a gradient) for disabled drivers and, nearby the Tourist Information Centre and the only public wheelchair accessible toilet in town (apart from one on the upper floor of the Council offices where there is no lift). There are two further parking spaces for the disabled in Castle Street and one adjacent to the Council offices.

Like most towns, the proliferation of A-frames, and in some cases, goods displayed on the pavement, making use of the roadway is the only practical means of travel.
